Who's developed?

Sometimes when I contemplate a visit to the US, I am reminded of the many things we do better in India. Some of these might be surprises.

  1. Couriers. Indian couriers are much more economical and quicker than the monoliths in the US. Competition, lower labour costs etc contribute I assume.
  2. Advertisements. Most American ads are bland and boring. They tout things like awards or special offers. Indian advertisements are often funny or thought provoking and make a point about current affairs. The difference is so great they simply cannot be compared. This is an advertisement for Verizon. It is not only boring, it is misleading. The actual cost of an unlimited plan is $75 plus taxes. https://www.verizonwireless.com/plans/verizon-plan/ The advertisement is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3zptG2nVmM. Now compare this with this advertisement for Fevikwik. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4WZF74dAg4.
  3. Online grocery shopping. There are so many options from Big Basket to Grofers at which you can get practically all the groceries you need. There is nothing comparable in the US. Amazon seems to have plans to begin something but Amazon pantry is just shameful compared to Big Basket.
  4. Public transport. Okay, this might be a contentious one but you have to compare like to like. Sure New York City has superb subway and bus services but move out to the suburbs and you're helpless without a car of your own. Many smaller towns have practically no public transport options. In India you can always find a rickshaw or a bus or at least a bullock cart in the smallest of towns. Ride hailing services like Ola and Uber are far cheaper in India and the waiting times are far shorter.
  5. A secular government. Again, this may sound bizarre in the age of Modi and Adityanath but the longest serving Prime Minister of India was an atheist. Several state governments have been headed y avowed atheists. Meanwhile the US government is overwhelmingly Christian. In fact, I doubt if anyone who admits to being an atheist has any chance of being elected to any political office in the US. http://www.huffingtonpost.in/entry/no-atheists-in-congress_us_586c074ae4b0de3a08f9d487
  6. College admissions. I know, we complain about reservations and about how competitive the exams are but the fact is that the JEE and the Medical Entrance Exams (now the NEET) have been quite good at selecting the most academically gifted students for the best colleges. The SAT, on the other hand is about at meaningful as the Tamil Nadu state board. to differentiate between the best students and the merely good, an exam has to be sufficiently difficult as to have a Bell curve whose tail does not hit the 100% mark because beyond that it loses definition. The SAT is inundated with people with perfect scores and then the colleges are deciding whom to select based on the color of their skin or how well they play the ukelele or how startling an essay they wrote.
  7. Restaurants. No comparison. I always get the impression in the US that the food consists predominantly of filter paper.
  8. Electricians, plumbers, auto-repair men, tire puncture people. They may be more professional in the US but they are not even close in terms of availability and cost-effectiveness to the Indians.
  9. Hotels. We have the entire spectrum of options and at each tier, the level of service is far better at the Indian establishments. And we do not have to deal with toilet paper if we don't want to.
  10. Street food. No need to elaborate. Vada Pav in Mumbai, Chaat in Delhi.
